GA EAST MUNICIPALITY PROFILE

The Ga East municipality is one of the administrative districts in Greater Accra Region. Health-wise, its mission and vision are in conformity with that of the region and, hence, the Ghana Health Service. The municipality is, geographically, a small district located in the northeastern part of the region. Akuapim South bound it to the north, Ga North and Ga West to the west, Madina-La Nkwantanang to the east and the south by Ayawaso West. The municipality has a land size of 166sq/km.

The Municipality is divided into five sub municipals for the organization and distribution of primary health care services. These sub-municipals are Abokobi, Dome, Taifa, Haatso, and Taifa. There are eighty-three communities comprising mixed settlements i.e., urban, peri-urban, and rural in the municipality with some key communities include Abokobi (capital), Kwabenya, Dome, Haatso, Papao, Westlands, Taifa, Ashongman, Ashongman Estate, Atomic Hills Estate, Ablorh Adjei, Agbogba, Akporman, Boi, Sesemi and Adenkrebi.

Climate and Vegetation

The Municipality falls in the savannah agro-ecological zone. Rainfall pattern is bimodal with the average annual temperature ranging between 25.1oC in August and 28.4oC in February and March which are normally the hottest months. The district has two main vegetation types, namely shrub lands and grassland. The shrub lands occur mostly in the western outskirts and in the north towards the Aburi hills and consist of dense cluster of small trees and shrubs that grow to an average height of about five meters. The grassland, which occurred to the southern parts of the municipality, has been encroached upon by human activities including settlements.

According to the 2020 census, the municipality is almost totally urban with only 6.2% being rural. The municipality falls within the trans-Saharan belt of the region with two major Seasons (Dry/rainy). The atmospheric condition across the municipality varies directly with the seasonal changes. The atmosphere is mostly hazy with dry air during the dry season and musky with humid air in the rainy season.

Economic Activities

The main economic activity is trading with the minor ones being farming and artistry. The level of education among the natives is low and it has resulted in the high rate of unemployment and, therefore, poverty. There are pockets of affluent neighborhoods in the municipality.

Cultural Aspect

The indigenous Gas celebrates the major festivals, the yam and Homowo.

Health system and Infrastructure

The Ga East Municipal Health Management Team (MHMT) is responsible for all health service delivery in the Municipality. Each sub-municipal is responsible for the delivery of health services to the population of their defined areas, and they have clinics, hospitals, polyclinics, or maternity homes. There are TBAs and other care providers, such as pharmacy shops, chemical shop dealers, maternity homes, traditional healers etc., in the municipality. Malaria continues to be the major cause of attendance in the Outpatients Department (OPD).

There are Thirty-seven (37) health facilities in the Municipality, out of which six: Adenkrebi CHPS compound, Abokobi Health Centre, Taifa Polyclinic, Ga East Municipal Hospital, and Dome RCH Clinic and Boi Health Centre are public. Haatso Government Maternity is currently not being used because of infrastructural defects. These facilities render OPD, outpatient, inpatient, surgical, maternal, child health, and gynaecological services. There are Forty-One (41) CHPS Zones currently in the Municipality.

Population

Following the 2020 Population and Housing Census, the population of the Ga East Municipality for 2024 is estimated to be 312,242 (Three Hundred and Twelve Thousand, Two Hundred and Forty-Two), with a growth rate of 5.69% representing 5.23% of the population of the Greater Accra Region.
