Sene West District Profile

Overview

Sene West District, located in the eastern part of the Bono East Region (formerly Brong-Ahafo Region) of Ghana, was created on March 10, 1989. The district was later split into Sene West and Sene East districts on June 28, 2012. The district covers an area of 2,570 square miles (6,667 square kilometers) with Kwame Danso as its capital.

Settlements

The district comprises Kwame Danso (the district capital), 19 other towns and villages, and several rural communities.

Sene West District is bordered by:

  • East: Sene East District
  • South: Atebubu-Amantin District
  • West: Ejura/Sekyedumase District
  • Northwest: Nkoranza North District
  • Northeast: Pru East and West Districts

Type of Settlement

  • Rural: The majority of the district is rural, with scattered villages and farming communities.
  • Urban: Kwame Danso and a few other towns have urban characteristics, featuring markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Economy

The economy of Sene West District is primarily based on:

  • Agriculture: The mainstay of the economy, with crops such as maize, yams, and cassava.
  • Fishing: A significant activity along the shores of Lake Volta.

  • Water: Lake Volta, several rivers including the Sene River, and wetlands.
  • Forests: Dense forests in the north and west.
  • Minerals: Gold, diamonds, and other mineral deposits.

Education and employment status vary significantly with marital status. Notably, 37.1% of the married population have no education, while 86% are employed.
