Overview

Tano North Municipality is one of the administrative municipalities in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. The municipality was carved out of the then Tano Municipality in 2004 with Duayaw Nkwanta as its administrative capital. The Municipal Chief Executive is the head.

land size

The Municipality covers an area of 837.4 square kilometres and shares boundaries with Sunyani Municipal to the North West, Asutifi District to the South West, Ahafo- Ano South District (in the Ashanti Region)to the South, Tano South Municipal to the South West and Offinso Municipal(in Ashanti Region) to the North East.

population

The municipality has a projected population of 99,628 for 2024 with a growth rate of 2.4%. The dominant ethnic groups are the Akans, the main ones being the Ahafo, Asante, Bono, Akwapim and Fante who constitute about 62.5 percent of the district population. (2010 Population and Housing Census)

vegetation

Farming is the major economic activity in the municipality which covers about 67.1% and major crops cultivated includes; maize, cassava, plantain and cocoyam. Newmont Gold Ghana Limited has discovered some gold reserves in five communities within the Municipality engaging about 5% of the youth in the construction phase of the mining process.

health facilities

The Municipality has five Sub-Municipalities with 110 communities with Twenty health facilities;3 Hospitals,5 Health Centres,2 Clinics and 10 CHPS Compounds. Major causes of ailment presented in the various Health facilities include malaria, Upper Respiratory Tract Infections and Rheumatism and Other Joint Pains. Orthodox medicine is the predominant health seeking behaviour by inhabitants in the municipality, others include, traditional and spiritual healers. Out of the twenty health facilities in Tano North Sixteen are owned by Ghana Health Service, Three by CHAG and one private.

education

The Municipality has 120 basic schools of which 84 are public and 36 private. There are five Senior High Schools and four health training institutions.

roads

Apart from Sunyani – Berekum first Class Road, that links the administrative capital to major towns, like Fiapre and Nsoatre; most towns are linked by second Class and third Class (Feeder) roads. The larger terrains are linked by tracts and paths.

population

The growth of the Municipal population has been steady. Apart from the natural growth rate, we can also attribute the migration of settler farmers into the Municipal as a contributing factor to the current population of the Municipal. The current Municipal population is estimated at 147,366, with the population dynamics being 36,547, 5,894, 5,894 and 17,683 for WIFA, expected deliveries, children 12-23 months and children 23-59 months respectively.

The main occupation is farming; however, trading has gained momentum in recent times. There are quite a number of public and civil servants employed in various institutions. There are also myriads of adolescents, young men and women without employment.

communication and transportation

Mobile telecommunication available in the municipality includes; MTN, Telecel and Airtel Tigo. Roads to all sub-municipals are tarred with the exception of Bomaa Sub-municipal.

As enshrined in ACT 525 section 23(1), a Municipal Health Committee is in place to advise the Municipal Director of Health Service and performs other such functions of the Ghana Health Service Council may assign to it.

healthcare

The Municipal Health focuses on the needs and preference of individuals, families and communities and addresses the broader determinants of health as well as focusing on the comprehensive and interrelated aspect of physical, mental and social health and well-being (PHC- WHO 2019).

The Directorate raises health issues and challenges facing the municipality for deliberations and strategic mapping during the Municipal Assembly social services committee meetings in accordance with the Local Government System (1996). The paramount goal is to improve the health outcome and health status of the people living in Tano North.

Groups identified as vulnerable in the Municipality includes; Children in difficult circumstances (those from low income and broken homes and orphans). Other categories include, Persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIVA), the aged, Persons With Disability (PWDs), women, unemployed youth and prison inmates.

The MHD is responsible dissemination of health policies, stakeholder dialogue, capacity-building, coordination, planning and implementation of health policies and programmes in the Municipality. The main Units under the MHD are Public and Clinical providing technical support, monitoring and supervisory functions of health services delivered at the, sub-municipality, and community level. The

Directorate is headed by a Municipal Director.
