Overview
The Wassa Amenfi Central District is one of fourteen (14) districts of the Western Region. It was established in 2012 by the Legislative Instrument L.I 2011. The capital town of the district is Manso Amenfi and it is about 163 km from Sekondi-Takoradi, the regional capital.
location and Land size
The district stretches from the middle to the northern part of the Western Region. It is bounded to the west by Wassa Amenfi West Municipal, to the East by Wassa Amenfi East and Prestea-Huni-Valley Municipals, to the south by Nzema East Municipal and Ellembelle District. It also shares boundaries with Bibiani-Ahwiaso Bekwai Municipal in the Western North Region. It lies between latitudes 5o 20’N and 7o 10’N and longitudes 2o 9’W and 2o 27’W. It has an estimated land area of 1,845.93 Square kilometres with more than 150 communities.
vegetation
The district falls within the high rain forest zone and has two (2) major types of vegetation cover. These are the moist semi-deciduous forest found in the northern part and the tropical rainforest found in the south where rainfall is heaviest.
geographical characteristics
The district lies geologically within the Ghanaian Shield area which consists of the lower Upper Birimian which is situated at the south-western part of the district, the mixed rocky settlements in the north-western, the Alluvial which also stretches along the Ankobra River in the eastern portions of the district. The Hornblende form a major part of the district and cover about 1,877.41 km2. It falls within the Asankrangwa-Manso-Nkwanta gold belt which is associated with the Birimian rocks. The prevalence of large gold deposits in the district has led to the sprouting of mining activities within the district.
ethnicity
Wassa is the dominant ethnic group in the district. However, there are other minor ethnic groups such as Nzemas, Sefwis, Asantes and Akyems. The Wassas are culturally homogeneous with respect to lineage, inheritance and succession. Like other Akan settlements, inheritance is through matrilineal lineage. Funerals, chieftaincy and marriage rites are also purely of Akan origins. The language spoken by the people in the district is predominately Twi.
health facilities
The District Health Directorate has demarcated the district into 6 sub-districts, which are Manso Amenfi, Agona Amenfi, Adjakaa Manso, Bonsie, Anakum and Anyinabrim. There are Forty-one (41) health facilities, of which one (1) is CHAG and the two being private. One (1) Polyclinic, Four (4) Health Centres, Thirty-Three (33) CHPS Compounds, Two (2) Clinics and One (1) Maternity Home. Health services are provided by this network of government, CHAG and private health facilities.

Based on the results of the 2021 population and housing census, the district has a projected population of 128,022 for the year 2024. This contributes to a population share of 5.8 per cent of the total population of the Western Region
challenges
The predominant causes of OPD attendance are Malaria, Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Diarrhoea Diseases, Rheumatism/Arthritis, Anaemia, Skin Diseases, Acute Urinary Tract Infection, Intestinal Worms, Road Traffic Accidents, Typhoid Fever among others.
Several strategies are underway to improve access to quality health services in the district to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants. The district is implementing several quality improvement projects aimed at addressing some quality gaps in health care delivery. We are open to partnership with any stakeholders to help improve access to quality health care delivery in the district.
