Background Information

Ahafo-Ano North Municipal is one of the 43 administrative districts in the Ashanti Region. It shares common boundaries with Tano North and South on the north, east with Ahafo – Ano South, west by Asutifi and south by Atwima Mponua Districts. It is located in the north western part of Ashanti Region. The total land area is about 567 square kilometers. It is located between 6o 47’N and 7o.02’N and Longitude 2o 26’W and 2o 04’W.

Roads

Most roads in the Municipality are in deplorable state, which do not only affect outreach programmes but also referral cases, except Anyinasuso to Betiako and Keniago to Subriso/Nfanti roads that are tarred.

Electricity

Electricity coverage in the Municipal is improving, as three out of the sixteen health facilities do not have access to electricity.

Population

The municipal has 6 sub-municipals and 107 communities with an estimated 2024 population of 94,707. The municipal has six (6) sub-municipals; Subriso, Betiako, Manfo, Twabidi, Anyinasuso and Tepa sub municipals. Predominantly, people living in the municipality are Asantes with few other tribes such as Dagomba, Ga, and Ewe. For the purposes of community health service delivery, the municipal has been demarcated into 39 CHPS zones.

The district has a total of twenty- six (26) health facilities with eight (8) being Government owned, three (3) Mission/CHAG, nine (9) private hospitals/Clinic, two (2) specialist Hospital, and four (4) maternity homes during the period under review.

Occupation

Generally, the main economic activity of the populace is farming. It employs about 83% of the labour force, both direct and indirect. Plantain, cassava, maize and cabbage are the major crops grown. Cocoa and rice plantation are the major cash crop in the municipality, some farmers also have interest in orange and palm plantation. The second sector is Commerce, and engages about 13% and industry (mainly small-scale) takes 4%.

Rivers And Stream

Major rivers and streams include the Tano stretch which passes through Asuhyiae-Krakosua communities, Abu, Kwasu, Anyinasu and Supon. Buruli ulcer and Onchocerciasis diseases are predominately prevalent among the communities along these rivers.

Culture/Festival

The Municipal capital, Tepa has a Paramount Chief who is the head of the traditional council. There are also Sub Chiefs and “Odikros” who are heads of the Communities in the municipal. All these Chiefs owe allegiance to the Asantehene. The main Festival celebrated by the inhabitants of Ahafo Ano North Municipal is Akwasidae. During the Festival people all over, both citizens home and abroad visit for the celebration.

Religious Group

Analysis of the religious background of the population reveals that 75% of the people are Christians. About 18% of the people are Moslems and the rest; about 6.2% practice traditional religion.

Education

There are 198 educational institutions scattered in the municipality, ranging from Primary, Junior High, Senior High, and Training institution. Specifically, there are two (2) Senior High Schools namely; Tepa Senior High School, Tepa and Manfo Senior High School, Manfo. There is also one (1) Vocational/Technical School. The Municipal boost of one Nurses and Midwife Training College, Tepa Nurses and Midwifery Training College that continually train Nurses, Midwives and Health care Assistants (NAC) from all over the country and contributes to the Health Systems in the Municipality.
