Profile of Central Gonja District
Central Gonja is one of the seven administrative districts in the newly created Savanah region. It is located at the south-western part of Tamale in Ghana. It lies in longitude 1:5 and 2:58 West and Latitude 8, 32’ and 10, 2’ North. The district was carved out of the West Gonja District in 2004.
The Central Gonja District is located at the southern end of the Northern Region of Ghana. It covers a total land area of 8,353km square, representing 23% of the total landmass of the Savannah Region.
The district however is strategically linked between the southern sector and the rest of the two Northern Regions (Upper – East and West).

It shares boundaries with other districts as follows:
- Kintampo North District (B/E) in the South
- West Gonja District in the West
- Tamale Metro in the North
- East Gonja District in the East
Buipe is the administrative/district capital and it is approximately 104 km away from (Tamale) and 120 km to Damongo (Savannah regional capital).
The district is drained by two major rivers with their tributaries running through it, the Black and White Volta, creating a lot of hard to reach inland and island communities with scanty population.
Many of the people belong to the Muslim religion.
The predominant tribe is Gonja with others being Chokosi, Dagomba, Ewe, Dagaaba, etc.
The district has a population of approximately 156,915 with 284 communities. It is divided into six Sub-Districts (Buipe, Kusawgu, Mpaha, Tuluwei, Yala and Yapei) with thirty (30) Electoral Areas and 5 Area Councils.
In all, the District has 47 Health facilities comprising 1 District Hospital, 2 Polyclinics, 4 Health Centres, 37 functional CHPS zones, and 3 private health facilities in the District.
Central Gonja District has a very mobile population with majority of them being farmers, traders and fisher folks who move with their families thereby making health service delivery to these populations challenging.
