Background

The Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Assembly was established in 1988 by the Local Government (Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Assembly) (Establishment) Instrument, L.I 1387 under the then Local Government Law, 1988 PNDCL 207. The district was elevated into a municipal status in 2018 and inaugurated on Thursday, 15th March, 2018.Bibiani is the Municipal capital of the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal. It is located 356km to the northwest of Sekondi-Takoradi (the Regional Capital) and 88km to Kumasi, the nearest commercial center. The municipality’s proximity to large commercial centers such as Kumasi coupled with good highway, makes it attractive in doing business in the Municipality.

Population And land Size

The municipality has a population of 178,777 and an annual population growth rate of 2.1%. The Municipality is divided into five (5) sub-municipals and has about one hundred and nine (110) communities. The total land area of the municipality is 873 km square.

Ethnicity And Religion

The main indigenous ethnic group is the Sefwi, but due to migration, almost all the ethnic groups in Ghana are represented in this cocoa-producing district. The main religious groups in the municipality are Christians, Moslems, and Traditionalists.

Education

The municipality has a lot of educational facilities in the district. There are 5 Senior High Schools in the municipality. There are two categories of schools in the district, there are 70 Primary/KG schools that are managed by the government and 32 Primary/KG Schools. Also, there are 61 Junior High schools in the municipality and 52 private schools. In summary, the municipality has 215 schools. The literacy rate is very high, with over 70% of the population having formal education.

Economic Activities

The main occupation of the people in the district is farming. Cocoa is the major cash crop grown followed by coffee and oil palm on a smaller scale. The other crops grown are plantain, cocoyam, cassava, and vegetables. Green leafy vegetables are common in the district and the consumption rate is also high. Animal rearing is on a small scale and the inhabitants depend greatly on bush meat for their animal protein requirements. Fish is scarce in the district. Though fishmongers bring fish from the coastal areas to sell, the price is beyond the reach of an ordinary person. Small-scale gold mining also takes place in some parts of the district. Others are engaged in lumbering thus resulting in forest degradation with its consequent environmental hazards.

Health

Even though the health sector is under the direct management of the MHMT, other stakeholders from the public, private, Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), NGOs and the mining companies has over the years contributed in diverse ways to the improvement of the health of the populace by providing out-patient, in-patient and outreach services to the people in the municipality. Transport And Telecommunication

Telecommunication in the district, on average, is poor. There are three functioning communication networks (MTN, Vodafone GH, and Tigo) in the municipality.

The Municipal has an estimated projected population of 192,349 as at 2024 as projected from 2010 Census. Census data in 2010 shows that majority of its population are females (52.2%). For the purposes of health administration, the municipal is divided into Ejisu, Onwe and Krapa Sub-municipals.
