Background
The Ga Central Municipality is located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It is one of the 29
districts in the Greater Accra Region. The Municipality was created in accordance with the
legislative instrument 2135(2012). Its capital is located in Sowutuom. Ga central Municipality
remains predominantly urban. The district has a population of 364,748 people.
Health service delivery in the Municipality is through the Municipal Polyclinic, health centres
and a CHPS compound which are mainly government owned complemented by other private
health service providers under the auspices of the Municipal Health Directorate (MHD). The
municipal has 4 sub municipals, with fifty-five (55) health facilities including CHPS zones.
Health Profile
Health services delivery in the Ga central municipality is provided principally by private clinicsand maternity homes and outreach services by government through CHP Zones. The district has 1 polyclinic, 1 Clinic, 3 health centers, 1 CHPS Compound, 24 CHPS zones through which community-based health services are delivered and 31 private facilities. Services rendered in the district include child health services, ante-natal and post-natal services, family planning services, management of communicable diseases like HIV, TB and STI’s as well as non-communicable disease conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Administratively health issues in the municipality is managed at the level of the Municipal Health Directorate with functional health delivery systems at the district, sub-district and community level.

The directorate is responsible for implementing the policies of the Ghana Health Service at the district Level. This is done in collaboration with the District Assembly and Stakeholders. The directorate which is under the Ghana Health Service operates on the Guiding principles of Health Service Delivery.
