AKROFUOM DISTRICT PROFILE
Akrofuom District was created and inaugurated on 15th March, 2018 by a Legislative Instrument (LI 2329) through an Act of parliament (Act 936, 2016), after being carved out of Adansi South District Assembly in the same year. The district thus forms part of the forty-three (43) Administrative Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
Geography
The Akrofuom District lies within Latitude 40” North and 6 degrees 22” North and Longitude 1 degree West and 1 degree 38” West. It is on the Southern part of the region. Districts in the region sharing boundaries with Akrofuom are Obuasi municipal and Obuasi East to the North, to the East by Adansi South and Adansi Asokwa to the North-East. The district also shares boundaries with Upper Denkyira Municipal of Central Region to the South-West. The district capital is about 80Km drive to Kumasi, the regional capital. The district has a total land area of 589sq.km. About 334.5sq km (54%) of this total land area is made up of forest reserves. Geographical accessibility remains a huge challenge in the sub-districts as many communities are widely scattered and with virtually no motorable roads connecting these communities, access to healthcare for many is a challenge.
Topography and Drainage
The land ranges from flat to gentle undulating with average elevation of about 350 meters above sea level. Generally, the District is hilly with several rivers and streams. Major rivers found in the district are Gyimi, Menso, and Offin. Minor streams also drain into these major rivers.
Climate
The Akrofuom District experience semi- equatorial climate conditions with extensive nature of the forest reserves in the district ensures a very good rainfall distribution pattern, which is characterized by two rainy seasons with peak periods around May–June and October. The average annual rainfall figures are between 1600 mm and 1800mm with an average of 150 rainy days recorded every year. Relative Humidity is quite high (75%-80%) in the wet season.
