Profile of Amansie South District

Amansie South District is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Amansie West District. Amansie South District was carved out of the Amansie west district on 15th March 2018. It is a new district and one of the most deprived districts in the Ashanti region in Ghana. The district covers an area of about773,5 km2 (298.7 sq. ml) and Manso Adubia is the district capital. The district is located within latitude 6:00 west: 6:35 North: 1:400: 1:400 South, 2:050 East. The District Health Directorate started functioning in June 2019. The district spans an area of about 1,364 square kilometers and constitute nearly 3.4% of the total land of the region. It is situated in the Western part of Ashanti Region and has Manso Adubia as its capital. Other major settlements in the district are Datano, Tontokrom, Keniago and Agroyesum. Politically and administratively, the district has only one constituency that is Manso Adubia constituency. The inhabitants are mainly Ashantis and settlers from the three northern regions of Ghana because of the galamsey activities. There is 27 km asphalt road in the entire district and about 1/8 have no network and a ¼ no national grid.

Boundaries

The district shares common boundaries: North- East by Amansie Central District, East by Bekwai municipal, to the South-West by SefwiBibiana in the Western North region, to the North West by Amansie West district, Atwima Mponua district to the west. To the south by Upper Denkyira district in the central region.

Geography

The district capital, Manso Adubia, is approximately 130 km west of Kumasi. There are a few gold deposits in the district.

Population size and distribution

The district has 84 communities with a population of 121,305 (2021 projected population census). The population of the district is concentrated in a few accessible areas.

Administrative Areas

There are five Area councils namely Mem, Adubia, Keniago, Datano and Watreso area councils. There are twenty-six (26) electoral areas in the district with each electoral area having at least one CHPS zone. The district is divided into four (4) administrative sub-districts for effective service delivery, and they are Agroyesum, Adubia, Keniago and Tontokrom.

Ethnicity

There are about 5 ethnic groups in the district. The major groups include, Akans, Hausa, and other foreign ethnic groupings. Based on socio-cultural organization and development. However, there are inter-tribal marriages and peaceful co-existence, which provides unity in diversity.

Main Economic Activities

Agriculture is the major occupation in the Amansie South district accounting for over 50% of the labour force. Apart from agriculture, there are small-scale mining in the district. This activity made it possible for a lot of foreigners in the district. Both males and females engage in small-scale mining. About 20% of the population in the district engage in the small-scale mining. There is a big market located at Datano which attract people from far and near on every Tuesday. The District Assembly generate some funds from this market for developmental activities in the district.

Health Facilities

The district is divided into 4 Health sub-districts namely, Agroyesum, Edubia, Keniago and Tontokrom with 25 Health Facilities and sub divided into 26 CHPS zones with 16 CHPS compounds for easy access to health care delivery. In addition to the CHPS compounds the other healthcare facilities are two Hospitals-St Martin’s Catholic Hospital Agroyesum the district hospital and Damptey Hospital a private. There are 3 Health Centres, 3 clinics and a maternity home managed by private. There is only one laboratory in the Ghana health service facilities in the district.
