BANDA DISTRICT PROFILE

Overview

The Banda District is one of the newly created Districts in the Bono Region of Ghana which was inaugurated on 28th June 2012. It was created with a legislative instrument (LI) 2092 (Republic of Ghana, 2012). The Banda District has Banda Ahenkro as its capital.

Religious and Ethnic Composition

Christians dominate in the district with 62.6% of the population. Muslims constitute 24.07% whiles 8% are African Traditionalists and 5.42% do not belong to any of the religious group. The district is quite heterogeneous with Banda ethnic group forming the majority. The other ethnic groups in the district are Ewe, Kologo, Bono, Nafana and Lugei.

Demographic Characteristics

The district has a population size of 30,530 spread over 98 communities (Source: Ghana Statistical Service, 2021 population and Housing Census). This low density of the district implies that there is low concentration of people in the district and coupled with scattered nature of settlements make it extremely difficult to provide basic services to the people of the district. It also makes monitoring and evaluation of programmes and projects difficult to undertake.

Health Facilities

The district has eleven (11) functional health facilities all owned by Ghana Health Service. The only facility owned by the Bui Dam site (SINO-Hydro medical Centre) which was purposely set-upped for the workers at the dam site is not functioning now. All these facilities have the basic equipment to help them deliver quality service to the people in the district.
