overview

The Bosomtwe District, carved out of the then Bosomtwe Atwima Kwanwoma District in November 2007 by LI 1922, has Kuntanase as its capital, located approximately 28km from Kumasi. It is bounded to the north by Asokwa Municipal, to the east by Ejisu Municipal, to the south by Bekwai Municipal and Bosome-Freho District, and to the west by Atwima Kwanwoma District. The district is peri-urban and forms part of the Greater Kumasi concept. Notably, it boasts Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana’s only natural lake, with a diameter of about 35km.

Health Sub-Districts

For health purposes, Bosomtwe District is divided into four sub-districts:

  • Amakom
  • Kuntanase
  • Pramso
  • Jachie

These sub-districts collectively encompass 32 functional CHPS (Community-based Health Planning and Services) zones, aligned with the 32 electoral areas.

Healthcare Facilities

Government Hospitals

  • Kuntanase Government Hospital: The primary government hospital serving as the district hospital.
  • Ashanti Regional Hospital (Sawua): Yet to be operationalized but located within the district.

Mission Hospitals

  • St. Michael’s Catholic Hospital (Pramso)
  • Anglican Eye Specialist Hospital (Jachie)

Private Hospitals

Eight(8) private hospitals operate within the district.

Health Centres

  • Government Health Centres: Three centres.
  • Mission Health Centres: Six centres, belonging to the Methodist, Anglican, and Seventh Day Adventist Churches.

CHPS Compounds

Eleven(11) CHPS Compounds are spread across the district.

Private Maternity Homes

Two(2) private maternity homes operate within the district.

Health Training Institutions

  • St. Michael’s Nursing and Midwifery Training School (Pramso)
  • Wisconsin University (Feyiase)

District Health directorate

The Bosomtwe District Health Directorate is headquartered in Kuntanase and is led by Dr. (Pharm) Timothy Twumasi-Mensah.

Units and Heads

  • Clinical Care Unit: Headed by the Medical Superintendent of the District Hospital and the District Pharmacist.
  • Public Health Unit: Led by the District Public Health Nurse and the District Disease Control Officer.
  • Administration: Managed by the Human Resource Manager and the Administrator.
  • Finance Unit: Overseen by the Head of Finance.

Other units within the directorate include the nutrition unit, health information unit, and health promotion unit. The heads of these units form the Core Management Team.

Committees and teams

This committee meets quarterly to advise the District Director of Health Services (DDHS) on key issues aimed at improving health service delivery in the district.

This team comprises the heads of all health facilities within the district, including both public and private institutions.
