Central Tongu District

District Profile

The Central Tongu District was carved out of the former North Tongu District according to legislative instrument (L.I 2077). It shares boundaries with North Tongu, South Tongu, Akatsi South and Adaklu Districts of the Volta Region, AdaWest and East Districts of the Greater Accra Region. The District’s total land area is about 700 Km2 which is about 3.1% of the total land area of the Volta Region and has a total population of 87,936 projected from the 2020 census. The District is mainly accessible by road and by river (using boat and canoe) on the River Volta. The two means of accessibility makes room for smooth transport of goods and people to and from the District. Part of the District is divided into two unequal halves by the Volta River, stretching from Titikope in the North to Awadiokome Island, located south of the Lower Volta Bridge at Sogakope. There are a total of two hundred and fifty (250) communities in the district based on the assessment made during the 2000 population census. There are three kinds of hard to reach areas in the district namely: Island communities i.e Mafi-Dugame, Mafi-Kebenu, Siakome, Kebegodo, Bakpa Tademe, Old Bakpa and AwadiowoKome. Inland hard to reach areas i.e Kpogadzi, and those areas which are seasonally hard to reach especially in the raining seasons e.g. Avedo (Wudukpo, Amukpo, Kwaotsekope) and Kpoviadzi (Kpowu-afiadenyigba.Gafatsikope, Atiglinyikope) etc. The district is divided into five (5) sub-districts for health delivery. These are Adidome, Kpoviadzi-Avedo, Mafi-Kumase, Mafi-Sasekpe and Kpogadzi. There is one District Hospital thus the Adidome Hospital, five (5) Health Centres namely, Mafi-Kumase H/C, Sasekpe H/C, Kpoviadzi H/C, Dove H/C and New Bakpa Health Center, one (1) private clinic, Biodun Maternity Home and Eye

Clinic, and Seventeen (17) CHPS zones namely. Mafi-Agoe CHPS, Mafi-Gidikpoe

CHPS, Seva CHPS, Adalekpoe CHPS, Avedo CHPS, Tove CHPS, Kpogadzi

CHPS, Adidome Zongo CHPS, Dekpoe CHPS, Mafi-Yingor CHPS, Anfoe CHPS,

Mawoekpor CHPS, Old Bakpa CHPS, Adakpo CHPS, Fiekpe CHPS, Kome

(Island) CHPS, Wudukpo CHPS and two (2) School infirmaries namely ADISEC Clinic and MAKSEC Clinic.
