Overview
East Gonja Municipality is one of the 260 metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the seven (7) MMDAs in Savannah Region.
A legislative instrument (LI 1938) created the East Gonja Municipality in 2007, Salaga as the administrative capital. It is located at the South-eastern section of the Savannah Region of Ghana. The municipality lies between Latitude 8oN & 9.29oN and, Long. 0.29oE & 1.26oW. It shares boundaries with the North East Gonja District to the North, Central Gonja District to the West, Nanumba-North and Kpandai Districts to the East, and the Volta and Bono East Region to the South. The Volta and Bono East Region are separated from the Municipality by the Volta Lake. However, a sizeable land mask of the Municipality lies beyond the Volta Lake and can only be accessed through Pru East District in the Bono East Region after crossing the Lake. Salaga, the administrative capital of the Municipality is located about 276km southeast of the Savannah Regional capital, Damongo.
The Municipality is further divided into Seven (7) official Sub-Municipals after curving out North East Gonja District. The Municipality has a projected population of about 129,429 with a growth rate of 2.2%. It is endowed with 231 communities and served with one (1) hospital, three (5) health centres, four (4) clinics, eight (34) operational CHPS and 18 with compounds and one (1) Polyclinic.

To promote long, healthy and productive lives and reproduce without risk of injuries or death.
To reduce the excess risk and burden of morbidity, mortality and disability, especially in the poor and marginalized groups.
To reduce inequalities in access to health, populations and nutrition services and health outcomes
To implement approved national policies for health delivery in Ghana.
To Increase access to good quality health services
To manage prudently resources available for the provision of the health services
functions
• Establish effective mechanism for Disease Surveillance, Prevention and Control in the Municipality.
• Develop appropriate strategies and set technical guidelines to achieve Ghana national policy goals/objectives.
• Undertake management and administration of the overall Ghana health resources within the service.
• Promote healthy mode of living and good health habits by people in the Municipality.
• Provide in-service training and continuing education of health staff in the Municipality.
• Perform any other functions relevant to the promotion, protection and restoration of health in the district.
