Overview
Sefwi Akontombra District is one of the nine administrative districts in the Western North Region of Ghana. Established in 2007, the district was carved out of the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality and officially inaugurated on February 29, 2008, under LI 1884. The district capital is Sefwi Akontombra, which is located in the Sefwi Akontombra sub-district and houses the offices of the District Assembly.
Geographically, the district is situated in the southern part of the Western North Region, between longitude 2.87554 and latitude 6.0409. It covers a total land area of 1,120 square kilometers. The district is bordered by Sefwi Wiawso Municipal to the east, Aowin-Suaman to the southeast, Wassa Amenfi to the southwest, and Bodi District to the north. Sefwi Akontombra is 69 kilometers from Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital, and 440 kilometers from Accra, the national capital.
The district comprises 107 communities, many of which are rural. The predominant ethnic group is Sefwi, with about 30% of the population being of Northern descent. Other ethnic groups include Ewes, Fantes, Akans, and various minority groups. The major religions practiced in the district are Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Religion. Akontombra is known for its large market, which is held every Friday, along with several satellite markets scattered throughout the district. The district is divided into five sub-districts and is served by twenty-nine health facilities.
