Overview
The Shai-Osudoku District, one of the 29 districts in the Greater Accra Region, is situated in the southeastern part of Ghana. According to the most recent census, the district’s population is estimated to be 113,812 as of 2024. Established in June 2012 following the enactment of L.I. 2137, the district was carved out from the former Dangme West District. Shai-Osudoku is one of the few remaining purely rural areas in the region, largely unaffected by the rapid urbanization of Accra’s neighboring suburbs. It also holds the distinction of being the largest district by land area in the Greater Accra Region, covering approximately 721 square kilometers.
Geographically, the district is bordered to the northeast by the North Tongu District, to the northwest by the Yilo and Manya Krobo Districts, to the west by the North Akwapim District, to the southwest by the Kpone Katamanso District, to the south by the Ningo/Prampram District, and to the east by the Ada West District. The landscape is predominantly flat and at sea level, with the exception of isolated hills, including the ancient Shai Hills, a notable tourist attraction. The historic Dodowa Forest is also located within the district.
The district’s population is primarily Christian, with minorities of Muslims and Traditional Believers. Farming is the main occupation, supplemented by trading, dressmaking, and white-collar jobs. The district is home to a diverse mix of ethnic groups, including Ga-Adangme, Akan, and Ewe, with commonly spoken languages such as Dangme, Ga, Twi, Ewe, and English.
The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Health Directorate oversees 67 health facilities serving over 233,000 residents. Most facilities, comprising 47 public options including 37 CHPS compounds, are managed directly by the Directorate. A further 20 private clinics and hospitals complement healthcare access. Our team works tirelessly across this network to deliver equitable prevention, screening, and treatment services to mining communities and beyond.
Our mission is to promote health, wellness and disease prevention in collaboration with community partners. We are committed to equitably serving all, from mine workers to schoolchildren to elders. Through targeted outreach programs and a robust facility network, no one in need is turned away.
